Dear OCCA members and supporters,

As February unfolds, we are honoured to join the nation in recognizing and celebrating Black History Month. This special occasion allows us to acknowledge the rich history, achievements, and contributions of the Black community that have profoundly shaped our society. The theme for Black History Month 2024 is “Black Excellence: A Heritage to Celebrate; a Future to Build.” This theme invites us to reflect on the remarkable achievements of the Black community throughout history and to look forward to the positive impact they will continue to make in the future.

In Central Okanagan, BC, and across Canada, we take pride in supporting and acknowledging the vibrant and diverse Black community. This moment is a celebration of the resilience, strength, and cultural richness that contribute to the fabric of our society, with a special acknowledgment of Lady Dia, our dedicated Director, who is an integral part of the Black community. We express our heartfelt appreciation for Lady Dia’s invaluable contributions, as she tirelessly works to deepen our community’s understanding of African culture. Reflecting on her journey, Lady Dia beautifully encapsulates the spirit of Black History Month, stating, “We not only celebrate our differences but also come together in our shared humanity, creating a tapestry of strength and unity that enriches us all.”

To learn more about Black History Month and explore resources, we encourage you to visit the official website of the Government of Canada: Black History Month . Additionally, for insightful data related to Black communities in Canada, please refer to Statistics Canada’s information: Statistics Canada – Black Communities .

Let us take this opportunity to celebrate, learn, and stand in solidarity with our Black friends, neighbours, and colleagues. Together, we can continue to build a more inclusive and diverse community.

Thank you for your ongoing support.
