Kelowna, BC  – Isolation has been a long-standing issue in the senior community. Even though today’s seniors are living longer and leading more active lives, too many still suffer from social isolation.

OCCA Communities Association is proud to announce it has received funding from the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP). This funding will allow OCCA to expand its long-standing efforts to help seniors live healthy, joyful, and connected lives, work the organization has been doing for over 15 years in the Okanagan region.

With this funding, OCCA will continue offering social, wellness, and educational activities with greater capacity so that seniors can build friendships and reduce isolation through community.

“As a senior immigrant, I felt isolated and lonely, but with OCCA’s help, I’ve found meaningful connections in Canada,” said Jiafu Qiu, a long-time program participant.

The New Horizons for Seniors Program is a federal grants and contributions program that supports projects improving the well-being of seniors and promoting inclusion and active participation in communities across the country.

“I am proud of our project, funded through the New Horizons for Seniors Program,” said Fei Liu, Executive Director at OCCA Communities Association. “This funding will allow us to continue doing what we love, supporting seniors,  with greater capacity and impact.”

We are grateful to the New Horizons for Seniors Program for this funding. When seniors are connected, everyone benefits through intergenerational sharing and honoring the dignity of those who came before us.
