Event Coordinator-Youth Summer Job Position

Hourly wage: $17.85 -$18.25

This position is funded through a youth employment program, and eligibility criteria are set by the funder. To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Be between 15 and 30 years old at the start of employment
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a person granted refugee protection under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada 

 

Position Overview

The Event Coordinator will play a key role in designing and delivering family-centered activities and community events that support newcomer integration in the Central Okanagan. This position will help plan and coordinate summer camps, family workshops, cultural celebrations, and community-building events that connect immigrant families with Canadian culture, local resources, and one another. The ideal candidate is passionate about community engagement, enjoys working with diverse families, and is committed to creating welcoming, inclusive spaces where newcomers can learn, connect, and belong.

This position will primarily operate during the summer program period, with potential for involvement in future seasonal camps and community events as funding allows.

Key Responsibilities

1. Event & Program Planning

• Assist in planning and coordinating family-focused events, summer camp activities, workshops, cultural celebrations and community gatherings.

• Support the design of age-appropriate and family-friendly activities that help children and parents learn about Canadian culture, school systems, and community life.

• Coordinate logistics, including schedules, registration, materials, snacks, and basic set-up/tear-down for events and camps.

2. Community Engagement & Inclusion

• Welcome and engage immigrants and newcomers from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds in all events and activities.

• Help create a safe, inclusive, and friendly environment that encourages newcomer families to participate, ask questions, and build connections.

• Support outreach to immigrant and equity-deserving families through community partners, social media, and word-of-mouth.

3. Partnership & Collaboration

• Work collaboratively with OCCA staff, volunteers, and community partners to deliver events and summer programming.

• Help maintain relationships with multicultural, Indigenous, 2SLGBTQI+, and other equity-deserving community groups to support inclusive outreach and participation.

4. Promotion & Communications

• Assist with creating basic promotional materials (e.g., posters, social media posts, email content) to advertise events and camps.

• Share clear information with families about schedules, activities, and expectations in a welcoming and accessible way.

• Represent the program in a professional and respectful manner at community events and activities.

5. Program Support & Reporting

• Help with event registration, attendance tracking, and basic record-keeping.

• Assist in gathering feedback from participants and families to improve future programs.

• Provide brief summaries or reports on activities, participation, and outcomes as needed by the Program Manager/Director or funders.

Qualifications

• Interest in and/or experience with event planning, youth programs, camps, or community activities.

• Passion for supporting immigrant, refugee, and equity-deserving families and promoting inclusion.

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport with children, parents, and community partners.

• Ability to work collaboratively in a team and also take initiative when needed.

• Good organization and time management skills, including handling multiple tasks in a busy program environment.

• Cultural sensitivity and respect for diverse backgrounds, languages, and experiences.

• Fluency in additional languages (especially those spoken by newcomer communities) is an asset.

• Previous experience in community engagement, multicultural programming, or settlement-related

Childcare Assistant -Youth Summer Job Position

Position overview

The OCCA Newcomer Family Learning & Community Inclusion Program supports children from immigrant families and other equity-deserving groups by providing accessible childcare and family-oriented learning opportunities. The program aims not only to support children but also to engage parents in learning about Canadian society, helping them build confidence and readiness for school systems, community participation, and workplace environments in Canada.

By addressing childcare barriers and strengthening family learning, the project empowers parents to fully participate in community events, employment, and training while ensuring their children receive academic, social, and emotional support in a safe and engaging environment.

Following the completion of the summer job term, the role may extend into part-time employment during the school year (September 2026–June 2027) and full-time employment during the Spring and Winter Camps.

Under the supervision of the Director of Childcare Program and Site Management, the Childcare Worker Assistant will support children through academic, recreational, and cultural activities while contributing to a welcoming environment that fosters belonging. This role also helps engage parents by encouraging family participation in learning and community integration activities, reinforcing their understanding of Canadian school expectations, community resources, and pathways to successful settlement and employment.

The Childcare Worker Assistant plays a key role in helping both children and parents build confidence, communication skills, and readiness for life in Canada.

 

Key Responsibilities

- Supervise and care for children during academic, recreational, and cultural activities, ensuring their safety and well-being at all times.

-Support children with homework and learning tasks, providing age-appropriate academic guidance.

-Assist with transporting children from school to the program site (e.g., walking school bus) or support transportation as needed.

-Maintain a clean, organized, and safe environment in accordance with health and safety standards.

-Help engage parents in program-related learning activities that introduce Canadian school expectations, community norms, and settlement resources.

-Communicate effectively with parents regarding their children’s progress, challenges, and any incidents, fostering trusting relationships.

-Report concerns related to behaviour, development, or emotional well-being to the Program Manager.

-Monitor and document developmental observations and safety concerns.

-Organize program materials, documents, and child files to ensure accurate and up-to-date records.

-Assist with site setup and general support at 1460 Inkar Road.

-Perform other duties as assigned based on program needs.

 

Qualifications

-Previous experience working with children in childcare, education, recreation, or a related setting.

-Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to support children and families from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

-Understanding of child development and best practices in childcare and early learning.

-Ability to multitask, manage time effectively, and respond to changing needs.

-First Aid certification is an asset (training may be provided).
