We are proud to celebrate Black History Month—a time to honour the rich heritage, resilience, and invaluable contributions of the Black community. This month is a reflection of the struggles, achievements, and ongoing progress of Black individuals who have shaped Canada into the diverse nation it is today and who have continuously fought for inclusivity. We stand committed to fostering a community that recognizes and uplifts the voices, stories, and legacies of Black Canadians and immigrants, ensuring that their history is acknowledged and celebrated year-round.

The impact of black individuals in Canada is undeniable, from early pioneers to modern trailblazers in business, politics, arts, and activism. In Kelowna, the Black community has played a significant role in shaping the cultural and social fabric of the city. From community leaders advocating for inclusivity to entrepreneurs enriching our local economy, their contributions continue to inspire growth and unity. At OCCA, we recognize and honour the Black community’s achievements while also acknowledging the challenges that remain in the fight for equity and representation.

Diversity and inclusion are at the core of our mission, and we are dedicated to creating a space where all individuals, regardless of background, feel valued and heard. Through educational initiatives, cultural events, and advocacy, we strive to build a community where diversity is celebrated, and everyone has an opportunity to thrive. Black History Month is not just about reflection—it’s about action. We encourage our members to engage in meaningful discussions, support Black-owned businesses, and participate in initiatives that promote racial equity and justice.

Fei Liu, Executive Director of the OCCA Communities Association, emphasizes the importance of this celebration: “Black History Month is a time to honour the rich history, resilience, and contributions of Black communities in Canada and beyond. We recognize that diversity strengthens our communities, and we remain committed to fostering inclusion, equity, and justice. This month, and every month, we celebrate the voices, achievements, and cultural heritage of Black leaders, past and present, while reaffirming our dedication to an equitable future for all.”

Together, let’s continue fostering an inclusive and diverse society where every culture and contribution is respected and valued. For more resources or to learn more about the wide impact of the black community on Canada visit the Canadian Heritage
