Before I was part of the JCF Cohort program, I was in a bad place. Twenty three years old, saddled with psychological trauma from past experiences, on top of being unemployed and struggling. I had been out of work for nearly three months, after my previous employer blindsided me by replacing me with someone else. I hadn’t expected it at all, I was under the impression that I had a positive relationship with the company and people. This sudden shift and the shock of unemployment took a toll on me, and it was only with a month of recovery and the help of Dr. Meng and my friends that I was able to move on with my life.
I feel extremely lucky to be part of the JCF program. With the help of instructors like Michael, I’ve gained plenty of skills in many fields. He helped me understand where I faltered in my previous work, how to move past it, and help inspired the confidence I needed to make the most of my life. With the program’s help, I was able to pick myself back up and find work again.
If there was anything I’d want to say to people in my position, it’s this: Never give up, even when it seems hopeless. It’s common to not hear back from the jobs you apply to, but you can’t let it get to you. Work hard on your resume and be your best self. Most importantly, remember to reach out for help whenever you feel helpless or stuck.
I was able to use all my experience and knowledge from the JCF program to find work and maintain a good relationship with my new employer. I’m excited for what the position can teach me, and what opportunities I’ll gain from it in the future. And it’s all thanks to the JCF program!
The OCCA-JCF program is funded by the Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills and the RBC Foundation. It offers Canadian workplace training through the partnership of the OCCA Communities Association and Okanagan College in Central Okanagan. OCCA also connects the JCF participants with employers, providing subsidies to help them gain valuable Canadian work experience and overcome typical job search challenges encountered by immigrants.
We respectfully acknowledge that the OCCA is operating on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Syilx Okanagan Nation.
