Brad's life felt like a never-ending quest for meaning and purpose, particularly after he dropped out of a liberal arts college in the United States. Despite his extensive background in music, having played the violin for nearly 15 years, and his many interests, he struggled to find a clear path forward. For almost a decade, he tried to reconnect with society through various programs and volunteer work, but none of these experiences led to a definitive career or life direction.
Open about his uncertainties and perceived shortcomings, Brad initially joined the Job Connect for Future (JCF) program primarily for the practical benefit of obtaining a free laptop, while also hoping the program could guide him towards future employment. Through JCF, Brad acquired essential skills and knowledge, gaining a clearer career direction.
The enriching experiences, supportive community, and structured learning environment reignited a sense of purpose in him. He opened up to the instructors and classmates, discovered his passion and confidence, and dispelled the clouds of uncertainty and aimlessness. He truly enjoyed his time in the JCF program.
Reflecting on his journey, Brad realized that becoming a teaching assistant could blend his passion with his profession. With renewed confidence, a clear goal, and hard work, Brad successfully applied for the Bachelor of Arts program at the University of British Columbia (UBC) for the 2024/2025 semester. This fall, he will begin his studies, convinced that dedication and commitment can lead to meaningful achievements.
As indicated by Brad, “Through this program, we embark on a transformative journey where each moment reveals new insights and connections. From engaging discussions and enriching field trips to challenging perspectives and exploring the imperative of decolonization, every experience contributes to our growth. As I navigate through the program's offerings with enthusiasm and dedication, I'm also empowered to pursue further training with government support. Thank you, JCF, for opening doors to knowledge and opportunities." May he continue to strive and shine brightly—his best is yet to come.
